Adapter model
With the application of CATIA V5 it is recommended to think about an associative relation between components or models and the practical realisation: the so-called „linked mode of operation“.

In this context, the so-called „adapter model“, known as „skeleton model“, too, plays a key role. Per definition, the adapter model is an agreed and coordinated interface model between interface partners. Here, the two attributes „agreed“ and „coordinated“ are of very high importance!

In other words: If there is an interface between two or several components with e.g. geometrical information concerning all components or to which all components should be related, it makes sense to collect these previously defined and coordinated information in one „pool“, so that all concerned persons can access them and link their models with.

In consequence, an adapter model apparently isn´t a component in the literal sense, but a pool with accumulated information.

The properties of adapter models

Due to the fact that an adapter model represents an interface between components and between two design levels as well, we have to analyse its properties more precisely and to fix them.

Adapter models have the following properties:

  • They contain geometry, parameters and rules
  • They only represent the defined and designated interface
  • Their content is modified only in agreement with the concerned interface partners
    They are basically in zero position (vehicle position)
  • They are linear
  • They are the CA-Master and are in charge of the responsible designer
  • They can be arranged hierarchically
  • The owner is responsible for the content
  • They can be exchanged with external partners
  • All persons involved in the project have read access
  • They are subject to a release process
  • They are interfaces in the whole process chain
  • They can have variants and alternatives

The list of properties is quite long, but we will notice later on that each of them has its authorisation and does justice to the adapter model and its rating in the design process.
